For those who've come a long way and have a long way to go:

If you're new to the site, you should know that when we do this right we will hear people say things like we're the first kind word someone has heard in as long as they can remember. Or they're glad they don't feel alone.

It's what keeps people coming back and thats what has made this community outstanding.

Using newcomers as a "punching bag" doesn't fly on

Type !REPORT to get a moderator's attention if someone is doing this.

Our staff, and our group, abhors vindictive and petty bans over bullshit. We do from time to time kick someone if they are causing a disruption or being hostile. Most bans are removed the next day, or at our business meeting on Saturday. We welcome all whose behavior in the chatroom is not problematic, regardless of whether or not we all got off on the right foot with each other.

Volunteers who get their "jollies" from kicking and banning people here will have an extremely short tenure. When we say "be friendly with your new friends" this applies to staff, too.

We don't do intimidation, doxxing (naming peoples employer, posting their address, home group, contact info, or any identifying info on a public figure would result in a ban) sexism, transphobia, racism, homophobia, etc.

We do not owe anybody a platform on which to demean, exploit, take advantage of, or abuse our community.

Exploiting us can mean a lot of things: We're not a focus group, we're not lab monkeys, don't spam a book or survey here. This website is for addicts or people who think they have a problem with drugs only.

We give second and third and twentieth chances here but we will not put up with bullying, harassment, predation, encouraging suicide or glorifying the use of drugs in such a way as to deliberately shock or offend.

Disparaging gossip, i.e. "she's crazy, stay away from her," "don't sponsor him," "he has no recovery," "she will never get it," are shunning and disassociation behaviors. That's not NA. That isn't our website's message either.

"I'm just here to get better."

This is not a dating, social media, or hookup site.

Remember why we're all here: Getting/staying off of drugs and finding a new way to live.

Welcome and encourage others -- which anyone can do, even with one day clean!

If we were a safe and supportive and positive environment.. our guests will remember that.

And if we were not... they will remember that too.

Please be mindful of how you represent NA, recovery, and or NACHATROOM.ORG.

When a butterfly lands on you, let it rest its wings. Don't try to smash it or keep it captive.

We're leaving the lights on for you in case you'd like to come back and rest your wings here again.

Some Quotes About Community

"It's not a matter of whether or not addicts know how to save their lives. The question is, whether they know that their lives are worth saving." -- Unknown

"The splendor of the rose and the whiteness of the lily do not take away the perfume of the violet or the delightful simplicity of the daisy. I understand that if all flowers wanted to be roses, nature would lose her springtime beauty, and the fields would no longer be decked out with little wild flowers. " -- St Therese

"I can only look at the seemingly limited space under the tent and think either it's my job to change people so they fit or it's my job to extend the roof so that they fit. Either way, it's misguided because it's not my tent. It's God's tent." -- Nadia Bolz-Weber, Pastrix

You Will Be Found (Excerpt)

Have you ever felt like nobody was there?
Have you ever felt forgotten in the middle of nowhere?
Have you ever felt like you could disappear?
Like you could fall, and no one would hear?
Well, let that lonely feeling wash away
Maybe there's a reason to believe you'll be okay
'Cause when you don't feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand
And oh, someone will coming running
And I know, they'll take you home
Even when the dark comes crashing through
When you need a friend to carry you
And when you're broken on the ground
You will be found
So let the sun come streaming in
'Cause you'll reach up and you'll rise again
Lift your head and look around
You will be found
You will be found
You will be found
You will be found
You will be found

You asked me what family is
And I think of family as community
I think of the spaces where you don't have to shrink yourself
Where you don't have to pretend or to perform
You can fully show up and be vulnerable
And in silence, completely empty and
That's completely enough
You show up, as you are, without judgment, without ridicule
Without fear or violence, or policing, or containment
And you can be there and you're filled all the way up
We get to choose our families
We are not limited by biology
We get to make ourselves
And we get to make our family

So, like, my favorite images are the ones where
Someone who isn't supposed to be there
Who's like in a space where we were not ever welcomed in, where we were not invited
Yet we walk in and we show all the way up
People try to put us down by saying
"She's doing the most," or "He's way too much."
But, like, why would we want to do the least?

... My eternal resolution will be "to do too much."
